Wood Slice Chalkboards

I love it when we’re in the middle of a weekend maintenance project and creative inspiration strikes! We’ve just come out of the Aussie summer so our gumtrees have dropped dry limbs around our property; which is a bonus for us because we can zip around and chop them up for our winter firewood supply. But, this year, we were in the midst of chopping when I remembered seeing beautiful wood slices floating around shabby home décor sites. I let loose my potentially ominous catch phrase, “Oo, oo! I’ve just had the best idea!” and without even flinching my husband set to work trying to cut thin slices of gumtree with his chainsaw {bless his steel-capped boots!}.

I won’t lie – it wasn’t easy {and it was pretty entertaining from an onlookers perspective} but, true to form, my husband did his best to turn my idea into a reality. I was soon left with some gorgeous gum slices ready to create some fun decorations for our home!

Before I set to work, I decided to clean up the slices so the end result would look a bit more polished. I took to work with the sander and found that some of the outer bark began to fall away. It shrank the size of the slice but I was excited to discovered the markings of old woodworm burrows which added so much more character! I grabbed the chisel and started breaking away the rest of the bark. I then sanded the rough edges and made sure there were no visitors hiding in each slice {woodworm aren’t really welcome house guests!}.

Once the wood was lovely and smooth I painted on a thick layer of chalkboard paint. I liked the look of the wooden rim so I left a thin border around the edges.

Once the paint was dry, I then had fun scribing words of wisdom on the wood slices. Well, some words of wisdom and one shopping list. Now I just need to master the art of chalkboard writing! But until then… Here’s a perfect photo edited version!

Why not create your own wood slice chalkboards! They are a relatively quick project and bring a lovely touch of nature into your home.
